Does this story justify envy?

Sometimes envy makes us be what we want to be at the same time the way we never thought we would be. When u envy it gives you the ability or motivations to become better or worse of yourself, be it financial or morality. The story of a boy who had first class in his first degree started in the year 2014 when he had admission to one of the tertiary institutions in Ghana. He was naive, as a first-year student, he did not know what he really wanted in the school, all he knew was that he was in the university and at the end of his four years he was going to get a degree and get a job to do. The first week in class, he heard his colleagues talking about GPA and first, second, etc. class.
Initially, he was just wondering what these people are talking about, as he was curious to know the things they are talking about. The boy was shy and reserve type and he did not want his colleagues to know he has no idea what they were discussing. The boy kept quiet and listen carefully. While his colleagues spoke about GPA and uni life. At the end of first-semester, results were out and they had to check it on their students’ portal. After checking, his colleagues started talking about what they got in their various courses. That very semester he got one A, one B+ and two B, the worst he had was C- which he did not even know he just escaped resitting for that same paper. At the end of his first year, he had a GPA of 2.86 and one of his closest friend in the class had a GPA of 3.74, which indicate first class. He saw the friends GPA and was amazed; he got envy instantly, wishing he had that GPA. On his way back to his hostel that evening after lectures, he was thinking about what he could do to get such grade point, even though he did not know how to calculate for the grade point. From the day he saw his friend’s GPA he got the spirit to get the same or do even better.
The anonymous boy graduated with the first class the same as his friend did.
From this the story, I can confidently say the boy was motivated out of envy for what a friend got that challenge him to do more and graduated with first-class as his friend did.
Do you also, believe what I saw as a positive envy to succeed? Give your comment and contribution in the comment box.

  1. The story line catches attention and its quite stimulating but what I learnt was not envy but a determination to do better. His friend's G.P.A, rather motivated him to achieve the same feat. Envy can kill, motivation can heal.
